Awkwardly Strong From Insecure to Inspirational Paula Jean Ferri Anna Allen Megan Sawyer 9781537558301 Books Reviews
Paula and Jess are the type of person that you want to surround yourself with. This is such a great book to help anyone learn more about TS or just about self-esteem.
Great viewpoint. Presents a really healthy approach to living and thriving with “quirky” aspects of the self, turning potentially embarrassing behaviors into true assets. Encourages the reader to use their own unique abilities to draw on for communicating with others more successfully and authentically. As the author says, “It’s all about communication.”
I received quite the education from this book! Since it's such an obscure disorder, I was grateful that someone could set the record straight on what Tourette's Syndrome is and how it can personally affect an individual. All I "knew" before was that Tourette's makes you curse loudly and out of the blue. (Thank you, 500 Days of Summer and What About Bob.) The book was very informative in relaying a history of the disease as well as likely causes while being engaging and non-jargony.
Even when it was not talking about Tourette's, I felt it was relateable and speaking to me personally. Regardless of where we are in life we can turn our own personal awkwardness around into our lovable quirks that we embrace. This book focused on positivity, which was very refreshing. So don't hesitate to pick up this book if you want a quick read and pick-me-up!
Paula Jean Ferri shares sensible and no-nonsense insights that are equally useful for those familiar with TS and for those that aren't. Whether we struggle with TS or not, we've all got things we're uncertain of or insecure about, or that land us in awkward situations. The key, as Ms. Ferri so charmingly demonstrates, is not to avoid awkward situations, it's to change how we view and react to those situations. Strength doesn't come from chasing someone else's idea of perfection. This is a simple concept, but it can be hard to implement, and Ms. Ferri's book presents a delightful and accessible jumping-off point for anyone striving to be more comfortable in their own skin. After all, it's the only one you've got.
Awkwardly Strong is, to paraphrase Mr. Twain, a great message well told. I can give it no higher compliment, and would highly recommend this book to anyone.
Enjoyed some very inspirational ways of thinking!
Confused by the identity of Jess being more of the focus than the true individual who writes the story. Seems as if there is a split personality and I would not want to personally encourage this to my own son who is very adamant and happy about being himself as a whole person, not 2 people, or 2 identities. So in that respect, this book is not for us.
Also, TS being on the Autism spectrum is a fairly new label. I'm not real interested in labeling people as it is always inaccurate and never helpful. Same goes for all this hoopla about ADHD, etc.
Much of the encouraging words of being happy with who you are is fantastic in this book! Thank you!
Great book on how to live confidently and celebrate your strengths and uniqueness. While Ferri wrote from her experiences with Tourette Syndrome, I think everyone can relate to being awkward at times. Very informative about the workings inside the mind and body of a person with TS. Ferri shares her stories and how TS has made her a better person, so to reach out to those struggling to fit in socially and live proudly with uncontrollable tics or screams. It is interesting she thinks of her TS as another person, and juggles with their relationship. I recommend this book to those struggling with TS and those who'd like to learn more about it!
An amazing read befitting an amazing voice. Right from the outset, Paula welcomes the reader with personal, funny stories that immediately make us feel like she's bee a friend for life. Her energy is infectious, her optimism is contagious. I have known some people with Tourette's. I was never close friends, but I knew them enough to wonder how they went through life with their condition. Paula Jean can answer your questions and brings you awareness if you ever wanted it.
And even if you don't, at least give her a chance for the fun factor, because I guarantee you'll crack your share of smiles throughout this book. Ca't recommend it enough!
